It's easy to use, doing much of the heavy lifting itself; it maps your home and stores its route in the clear, accompanying app.

Its circular brush was effective at moving debris into its path. It performed well when cleaning carpets and mopping hard flooring, too. Unfortunately, it struggled to lift all the pet hair testers had laid.

As for the tech, our tester loved the retractable legs and found the app clearly laid out and easy to follow – all the info you need is there, from battery life to dock controls.

The dock is also very compact for a self-empty model. The interior space is mostly given over to a larger-than-normal dust bag, which means you won't be bothered by the tiny onboard bin.

This mopping, self-emptying robot vacuum comes from networking giant TP-Link – probably best known for its internet routers rather than its home appliances. The Tapo RV30 plus has the clean and fussless appearance of a wifi hub, but the performance and features of a top-end robot vacuum.

In our tests, it left no debris behind on any bare floor — including vinyl and tile — and it was very easy to maneuver and carry thanks to its oversized wheels, compact design and easy-grip handle.

The Narwal Freo X Ultra is the best robot vacuum for carpet. It's a premium product, (and it's not available in the UK), but delivers the best carpet cleaning performance of any robovac we've tested. On test we found that not only did it suck up finer dust and dirt efficiently, it also scooped up larger debris – namely bits of cereal – just as well.

If none of the robot vacuums above take your fancy, here are some other models worth considering. Top 3 Automatic Vacuum Cleaners These robovacs all scored highly on test, but just didn't quite make our main guide.

It has a relatively advanced (and big) docking station – this one empties the vacuum bin, refills the mop and washes the mop pads – but it’s not the best we’ve seen at auto-emptying. On test, it didn’t happen automatically when the vacuum was full, instead clearing it at set intervals.

Why we love it: We've tested many Dreame stick vacuums, robots and vacuum mops in the GH Cleaning Lab and can confidently say that it's one of our favorite brands because it performs well for the price in multiple categories, including robot vacuums, vacuum-mop combos and mops for hardwood floors.

This one had us at retractable legs. A robot vacuum and mop that can clamber over obstacles really is a game-changer. Little steps though – this one can only manage obstacles up to 6cm, so think carpet strips rather than stairs.

That might not be an issue if you're cleaning on one floor as the bot will just return to its dock to recharge as required, but it becomes more annoying if you're using it on multiple floors.

You are looking for a lightweight, quick picker-upper for bare floors and low-pile rugs. The cleaning performance of this type of vacuum is getting better and better, and it may be the only vac some homes require.
